Real unemployment numbers?

Granted the unemployment rate looks grim and getting worse, but what’s really in the numbers? Back in the Great Depression, generally speaking, women stayed home and raised families while men worked. When unemployment hit 37% non-farm it was devastating to a family with one bread winner. Not all of course, but a big percentage of our generation made lifestyle choices that required 2 incomes and therefore 2 jobs. Certainly there are more single head of household families now than then but I think the dual income lifestyle has been the main catalyst for consumer spending and job growth. What I would infer from a 10% or greater unemployment rate in this country is not total devastation, but a return to a simpler life, kids being raised by their parents, Mom cooking dinner, smaller more affordable homes, and a resurrection of the family without the excess. Many say our kids won’t enjoy the same standard of living we did, that might be a good thing.
